Blog Post 8: Conclusion/ Afterthoughts
As Thanksgiving passes I feel it is important that we reflect on what we eat. I will set myself up as primary example, on Thanksgiving I ate like a pig and felt disgusting afterwords. I had turkey, ham, stuffing, three different types of pies, yams, two types of rice, biscuits and much more. I think the worst part about it all is that I didn't eat all day until dinner, which of course I learned in this course that it is important that we do not miss meals. I was cooking so much that I didn't have a appetite until very late at night. I believed that it was a test and that I failed myself and everything that I learned in the course. However, when I thought about my actions I realized that this is going to happen. I'm not going to be perfect with my eating habits, but the fact that I am aware of my actions will help me prepare myself better next year. Nutrition has changed over the past 100 years to eating together as a family being the most important part of the day, cooking from scratch being the routine, and playing outside with friends being the primary source of what exercise was. However, unfortunately, in the world I live in today everyone is in a rush we are buying from fast food restaurants, food production industries are doing whatever they can to earn a extra buck and not realizing that placing chemicals into animals that we are going to consume will harm us in the end. I am living in a word where we are so worried about saving money that we don't care what we are consuming nor are we teaching our children whats right or wrong about nutrition. It's usually those who have the right resources who are getting the right education about food consumption and nutrition. I believe we are becoming a little better, but the nation is taking baby steps. As for myself, I took this class as a challenge to better myself and I have mentally and physically.
Choosemyplate.gov has showed me a whole new thinking about food consumption. This website has educated me on portion control, what to be aware of, and breaks down what I need to be consuming based on my personal body composition and gives advice and recommendations. This is completely different and better than the food pyramid. Yes, I saw it throughout elementary, middle school, and high school, but it didn't give the social awareness and education like choosemyplate.gov does. Having a balanced diet and making exercise apart of our life makes changes we never knew it would. As I mentioned in my previous post, it keeps us mentally and physically strong. We can release stress from exercise, decrease anxiety, lowers blood pressure, and other risks that we could be faced with if we didn't make eating right and exercising a part of our life. It will truly make us feel and look younger, we wont have a fast metabolism forever. Blogger has been extremely helpful in making me aware of my consumption. I was able to not only write my feelings and thoughts, but see graphs and numbers of my personal body composition and consumption. It has been a complete pleasure using this tool and also other tools that were provided in my Contemporary Nutrition class. I would definitely recommend everyone to take a course like this and use a tool like blogger in order to create a better and newer "self". When we become aware of our health problems, our strengths and weaknesses I can just imagine how less expensive our healthcare costs will be. We will be paying our local farmers instead of paying our doctors a visit. Thanks for reading my blogs!
